The Centre volleyball team split a pair of matches in the Centre Classic on Saturday, falling 3-0 to Defiance College in the first match before coming back to defeat Fisk University 3-0 in the afternoon. Overall, the Colonels went 3-1 in the Classic and have a 5-6 record on the season.
Centre was swept in the first match, falling 25-12, 25-23 and 25-17 to Defiance despite building a sizable lead in the second game.
Senior Stephanie Woeste (Louisville, Ky.) led the team with 10 kills and also had a block. Freshman Suzanne Asbury (Louisville, Ky.) had seven kills, two aces and a block while sophomores Kim Lownds (Evergreen, Colo.) and Lydia Prevost (Knoxville, Tenn.) each had five kills. Senior Hannah Greer (Owensboro, Ky.) had 26 assists and senior Laura Hench (Lexington, Ky.) had 14 digs.
In the afternoon match, Centre made quick work of Fisk, sweeping by scores of 25-3, 25-17 and 25-10. Asbury led the way for the Colenels with eight kills and six aces. Prevost had seven kills while Stephanie Woeste (Louisville, Ky.) followed with six. Kary Stivers (Louisville, Ky.) had 20 assists and five aces while Amelia George (Boston, Mass.) had a team-high nine digs.
The Colonels are back in action Sept. 24 when they open up SCAC play against Millsaps and Rhodes at Sewanee.
