After record season, Centre women place 11 on All-SAA Team

After finishing one of the most successful seasons in program history, the Centre women's soccer team took three of the Southern Athletic Association's four individual awards and had 11 of its players recognized on the all-conference team Monday.

Amy Hebbeler, a senior defender from Fort Wright, Ky., was named the SAA's Defensive Player of the Year after earning that same honor in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference last season. Hebbeler was a key member of a defense that posted 15 shutouts and allowed just nine goals over 22 games for a 0.42 average. Also, from her defensive position Hebbler contributed two goals and three assists on the year.

Alex Combs, a freshman forward from Danville, Ky., was named the league's Newcomer of the Year after ranking second on the team in goals, assists and points with eight, five and 21 respectively.

Head Coach Jay Hoffman was selected as the conference's Coach of the Year after Centre's 2012 campaign, which finished with a 20-2 overall record and 6-1 mark in the SAA. The 20 wins set a school record, and the Colonels finished as champions of the SAA Tournament and co-champions of the regular season. The team also made its second straight NCAA Tournament appearance and advanced to the second round for the second straight year.

Hebbeler and Combs were also among five Colonels on the SAA First Team where they were joined by senior defender Rachel Brannen (Fort Mitchell, Ky.), sophomore forward Anne Mitchell (Fayetteville, Ark.) and freshman midfielder Maddie Slattery (Cincinnati, Ohio).

Centre placed three more athletes on the SAA Second Team in junior forward Morgan Collins (Utica, Mich.), senior forward Mary Taylor Kersey (Winchester, Ky.) and sophomore midfielder Katie Stevenson (Flat Rock, N.C.). Rounding out the all-conference selections were senior defender Brittany Eisner (Louisville, Ky.), junior midfielder Liz Miller (Nicholasville, Ky.) and junior forward Catey Hunter (Franklin, Tenn.).
