The Centre women's lacrosse team took an early lead and held on for a 9-7 victory over Rhodes in a Southern Athletic Association game Saturday in Danville, Ky.
The Colonels got three goals each from Meg Hawthorne (Cary, N.C.) and Emily Madden (Louisville, Ky.) while Sarah Mastey (Chattanooga, Tenn.) had a goal with a game-high four assists, and Jacqueline Anderson had two goals. Morgan Fuller led Rhodes with four goals.
The Colonels fell behind when Rhodes scored a minute into the game, but Centre answered with three straight goals and led the rest of the way. Fuller scored to pull Rhodes within one, but Centre outscored Rhodes 4-1 over the final 11 minutes of the half, with Hawthorne getting three of those, to make the halftime score 7-3.
Each team scored early in the second half to make the score 8-4, but then Rhodes made its move, scoring three straight goals to pull within one at 8-7 with 13 minutes to play. Centre was able to keep the Lynx scoreless the rest of the way though, and the Colonels got a bit of breathing room on a goal by Madden with 1:45 left.
Allison Eisner (Louisville, Ky.) made 11 saves in goal while Sarah Daniels of Rhodes had 11 stops. Centre took 29 shots to 26 for Rhodes, and the Colonels held a 9-8 advantage in draw controls and a 24-21 edge in ground balls.
With the win, Centre improves to 7-1 overall and 3-0 in SAA play while Rhodes falls to 5-3 with a 1-3 record in the conference. The Colonels are back in action when they host Piedmont at noon on Sunday.
