The Centre women's lacrosse team took the lead with four straight second half goals and held on to pull out a 9-8 victory at College of Wooster on Saturday in Wooster, Ohio.
Similarly to their first game in which the Colonels had four players score four goals each, four players scored twice in another balanced attack on Saturday. Meg Hawthorne (Cary, N.C.), Jacqueline Anderson (Louisville, Ky.), Emily Madden (Louisville, Ky.) and Sarah Mastey (Chattanooga, Tenn.) all scored twice in the game, while Ellen Resinger (Louisville, Ky.) added a single goal.
Anderson and Audrey Powers (Chattanooga, Tenn.) also had assists in the game for Centre. Abby Szlachta and Eliza Perry each had three goals to lead Wooster.
Centre began the game by falling in an early 3-0 hole over the first 10 minutes, but the Colonels were able to tie the score with consecutive goals by Mastey, Madden and Hawthorne. The teams went to the break tied at four, but Wooster was able to pull ahead by scoring the first two goals of the second half.
It was that point when Centre took over, scoring four straight goals to go up 8-6 with 13 minutes remaining. Wooster cut the lead to one with 10 minutes to play, but Madden scored just two minutes later to give Centre some breathing room. Wooster got one final goal at the 5:55 mark, but the Colonels were able to keep them off the scoreboard the rest of the way to preserve the victory.
Centre outshot Wooster 34-19 in the game, held a 11-8 edge in draw controls and turned the ball over 12 times to Wooster's 17. Allison Eisner (Louisville, Ky.) made seven saves in goal for the Colonels while Isabel Perman had 12 stops for Wooster.
Centre improves to 2-0 on the season while Wooster opens the year at 0-1. With the Colonels' Sunday game at Denison canceled due to impending weather conditions, they will next take to the field for Wednesday's home opener with Augustana.
