She earned a masters degree in Sports Administration from Eastern Kentucky University in 2000. While at Berea, Owens earned varsity letters in cross country, track, and tennis. The three-time high school state track champion also once held nine school records in track at Berea. Following the 2008 Cross Country season Owens was named both the 2008 SCAC Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year. In 2011 Owens was named the KTCCCA College Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year after winning Centre's first conference championship since 1994 and guiding the Colonels to their first NCAA Championship appearance in program history.

Coach Owens plans on continuing and improving upon the success of both cross country programs. "Our runners are very talented and dedicated to this sport that they love; they are also some of the top academic students in the nation, which makes for a great combination. I will work hard to continue to recruit the right student athletes that will meet our need both in the classroom and on the course."

Coach Owens married her husband Scott in June of 1998. They have one daughter Meghan and one son Cameron.
