The Centre men's lacrosse team rolled to a victory over Millsaps on Friday, reaching its highest offensive output of the season in a 23-8 win in a Southern Athletic Association game in Jackson, Miss.
In all, 14 Colonels scored goals in the game, and five scored multiple goals. Leading the way for the Colonels was Connor Stubbs (Decatur, Ga.), who scored four goals with two assists. Sumner Franklin and Aidan Leonard each scored three goals while Joey Lencewicz (Gates Mills, Ohio) and Conor Bennett (Alpharetta, Ga.) both scored twice.
Also scoring goals for Centre were Morgan Mayes (Prospect, Ky.), Eamon Delay (Hempstead, N.Y.), Matt Hughes (Vero Beach, Fla.), Patrick Vaughn (Signal Mountain, Tenn.), Corey Krill (Louisville, Ky.), Peter Murphy (Louisville, Ky.), Dustin Cowell (Culver, Ind.), Bryant Portwood (Charlotte, N.C.) and Austin Zehnder (Prospect, Ky.).
The Colonels took charge by scoring five straight goals in the first quarter to go up 6-1. A Millsaps goal made the score 6-2 at the end of the quarter, but Centre scored 10 of the next 11 to pull away.
The Colonels took a 16-4 lead to halftime, outscored Millsaps 4-1 in the third quarter, and scored the first two goals of the fourth to reach their largest lead at 22-5.
Centre held wide edges in the statistical categories, taking 54 shots to Millsaps' 24 while holding a 50-35 advantage in ground balls and a 21-13 edge in face offs. Clayton Brown (Louisville, Ky.) was one of four Colonels to see time in goal, leading the team with six saves. Chris Hood had 10 stops for Millsaps.
With the win, Centre improves its overall record to 5-3 and its SAA record to 2-1. Millsaps falls to 4-8 overall and 0-3 in the conference. The Colonels are back in action when they travel to Birmingham-Southern on Sunday.
