The Centre men's lacrosse team scored three unanswered goals in the final five minutes to come away with a 12-10 win over Berry in a Southern Athletic Association game Saturday in Rome, Ga.
The game was Centre's second in a row that was a meeting of SAA regular season co-champions from a year ago. The Colonels trailed going into the final quarter, but tied the game at nine on a goal by Dustin Cowell (Culver, Ind.). A goal by Berry's Bryan Byers gave Berry the lead again with 6:26 remaining, but it would be the Vikings' last. Centre took advantage of a penalty to tie the game on a Matt Hughes (Vero Beach, Fla.) goal at the 5:10 mark, then put the game away with goals by Cowell and Peter Murphy (Louisville, Ky.) in the closing minutes.
Sumner Franklin (Louisville, Ky.) had three goals and two assists, and Murphy had two goals with five assists to lead the way offensively for the Colonels. Cowell and Hughes also had two goals each while Mitchell Kraus (Louisville, Ky.), Corey Krill (Louisville, Ky.) and Austin Zehnder (Prospect, Ky.) all scored single goals. Byers topped Berry's scoring column with five goals.
The Colonels opened the game by scoring the first three goals and taking a 3-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. Centre went up 4-1 early in the second quarter on Zehnder's goal, only to see Berry come back to tie by scoring three straight. However, Krill and Franklin scored late in the quarter to take a 6-4 lead to halftime.
The Vikings stormed back in the second half, again scoring three straight goals to take their first lead at 7-6. The teams traded goals over the rest of the third quarter with Berry taking a 9-8 lead into the final period.
